The structure whereby the shares of an offshore corporation are owned by a foreign trust is used so extensively by tax planners today that many offshore tax planning arrangements rely on such structures. Also, in many cases, where trusts alone may previously have been used, trustees often prefer an arrangement whereby the responsibility for the administration of a trust's assets can be placed in the hands of the approved directors of an underlying company.

Trusts are very often necessary in relation to securitization transactions whereby the special purpose vehicle (SPV) must be owned by a charitable trust. They are also useful in holding the management shares of Cayman registered mutual funds.
